data sonification

What is data sonification? According to Wikipedia, it is “the presentation of data as sound using sonification” and, more specifically, “sonification is the use of non-speech audio to convey information or perceptualize data”. Data sonification is the representation of data — understood as information, almost always numerical — using sound as a medium, rather than the more common visual approach.

Since 2019 I've been involved in the creation of data sonification projects and installations, where I bring together my explorations in sound, coding, and visual art. In my artistic research, I am mainly interested in reconciling listeners intuitively with the underlying numbers: I often focus on information that is repeated daily by the media to the point of reaching a sort of semantic-numerical saturation, in which we lose contact with the actual content of the information and come out anesthetized.

Data sonification is a more direct, unmediated way to access the data and reconcile with them.

In all my projects I explore the relationship between data and sounds, often extending the idea of a data sonification from a purely an auditory experience to an interactive ground where musician can interpret and play with (or against) a fixed composition, thus giving an additional layer to experience.

Sometimes data sonification has been a valid tool for business and fellow artists to present a new way to look at data and information. Drop me a line for business enquiry

My projects have been presented by major Italian and non-Italian venues, including MEET Digital Culture Center, Linecheck Festival, Fuorisalone, and RSI (Radiotelevisione Svizzera Italiana) and have been featured in various publications and media outlets.
