sound-art _ data sonification _ electronic music

stateMent

Chelidon Frame is an experimental electronic music project based in Italy, that mainly works with field recordings, radio interferences, code, guitars, and processed sounds.

His installations are experience-based and suggest a dialogue between the location (both virtual and physical) and the proposed sounds, aiming to convey a message in a simple yet effective way. The use of code, data analysis, and data-driven sounds (data sonification) allows information to be experienced anew.

In his studio works and live sets, different layers of sounds - guitars, synthesizers, and custom-made instruments - pile up creating unexpected new soundscapes. He is the founder of the Asynchronous Drone Orchestra.

bio

Chelidon Frame (aka Alessio Premoli, 1990) is an Italian musician, composer, coder, and sound artist based in Milan. Since 2014, his focus has been divided between data sonification, electroacoustic composition, and live electronic music.

From 2014 to 2017, he mainly works as a studio artist, recording tracks, releasing albums, and participating in collaborative projects, like the “Ici. maintenant. où?” for the 5th Marrakech Biennale, and Waywords and Meansigns. In 2017, joins the San Fedele Center in Milan for its electronic music artistic residence/prize.

In 2019, he premieres his first data-sonification work, “The List”, a multichannel sound sculpture that broadcast an algorithmic composition made from the numbers included in UNITED Against Refugee Deaths’ List of Deaths. This first installment has been held in the main hall of the Bocconi University during MEMI Fest in Milan; a second one followed in 2021 at Itsliquid Art Space, Palazzo Albrizzi Capello, Venezia.

During the pandemic, he works on “COVID-19 Data Sonification”, a web audio installation converting Italian COVID-19 data into ever-evolving sound waves. In the same period, is involved with Città Sonora, for the “Suono e Ambiente” audiovisual festival, and with Green iDeal, a collective exhibition curated by Paratissima. Between 2020 and 2021, produces “meteo_music” for Fango Radio, an 8-part radio documentary about background music from weather report TV and radio transmissions.

In 2021, founds the Asynchronous Drone Orchestra, a remote collaborative project where different musicians are asked to share ten-minute (or more) recordings following a small set of rules; those sounds are then reworked into a longer and cohesive soundscape. Hosted by Camp Radio, since its first iteration, the project has had eighteen editions and more than ninety artists involved from all over the world.

In 2022, “The Dry Stone [no sound of water]” is first presented to the public, as the closing event of "Oltre Il Visuale" the first Italian conference on data sonification, organized by Paolo Ciuccarelli and Sara Lenzi. It is a hybrid project that layers a data sonification of the rivers Po’s drought, an electroacoustic improvisation (featuring Angelo Brezza on drums and Andrea Marinelli on electronics), and reactive visuals.

Since 2024 is part of the ECSIS ensemble, working and performing the homonymous project, an audiovisual performance for piano, vibraphone, orchestral percussion, and live electronics, a three-part soundscape, with accompanying visuals, that explores the scientific classification of extinction phenomena. The ensemble consists of Marius Arcioni (vibraphone and orchestral percussions), Samuele Arrigoni (piano), and Chelidon Frame (live electronics). In December is one of the artists shortlisted for the category “Next Generation” by Videocittà Awards.

In 2025 joins the Fuorisalone program with the installation “My Mud House”, an evocative modular sculpture created by Circe from the mud of the Lamone River that overflowed during the Faenza flood on May 17, 2023: he takes care of the accompanying soundscape, a data sonification that represents in aural form the flood and overflow data of the Lamone River. The project was coordinated by architect Pietro Montani and TerraCò. In June 2025, he is part of the Magnetica Festival, held by Tempo Reale in Florence.

Since 2019 is a live artist, presenting sets that ranges from electroacoustic music, non-idiomatic improvisation, drone music and live electronics. Chelidon Frame has been playing with different artists from the Milan and Italian scene, including: Tiziano Tononi, Andrea Marinelli, Angelo Brezza, Daniele Cavallanti, Margherita Carbonell, and many more.

His electroacoustic works have been performed in various international contexts, including but not limited to: Tempo Reale, Radiophrenia Glasgow, Radio Papesse, Piksel Festival, Chigiana Radio Arte, and Lisboa Inocum. Some of his tracks have been featured by Netflix and Sky in various TV series and documentaries.

Alessio Premoli, in his life outside of the Chelidon Frame project, is a guitarist, producer, and freelance software developer with a degree in Mathematics.
